My View on Raymond’s Future

Areas to Consider

Open Space

Let’s maintain our commitment to preserving open spaces. I propose energizing our Open Space Committee to align with our new Comprehensive Plan. We should develop a five-year strategy focusing on open spaces for recreation and parks for our community. The land at the end of Main Street, held in trust, is overseen by my friend who is eager to sell it to the town for use as a spacious park for everyone’s enjoyment. I am confident that we can achieve this goal to focus on our tradition of preserving open space.

Supporting Seniors

Supporting seniors strengthens community resilience and overall well-being. When we support our seniors, we reap multiple benefits.: a healthier population, the ability to age in place for long-time residents, and the preservation of our history as seniors impart traditions and cultural knowledge, thus enriching the fabric of community life.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging supports meals on wheels and other services in Raymond. No funding has been provided for this vital agency. I am committed to prioritizing the needs of seniors and backing those organizations that provide them with support.

Sidewalks

Residents have asked for sidewalks. I consider the Village to be lacking support for these projects, and although adding sidewalks may pose challenges, they foster a sense of community, enhance neighborhoods, and provide a safe means to relish the outdoors.

Town Hall and Community Center

A Community Center for Raymond consistently ranks high in survey results. Discussions about renovating or replacing the Town Hall have been ongoing for years. The necessity of a Public Works garage is undisputed. I suggest reallocating savings from a revised Public Works garage plan towards establishing a Town Community Center. I will champion a swift conversion of the anticipated Jordan Small Middle School into a comprehensive Community Center, encompassing Recreation, Town Hall, Library, an expanded Select Board Meeting area, and all essentials for enhancing the Raymond community.

2024 Comprehensive Plan

I will be the elected official responsible for guiding the 2024 Comprehensive Plan through the appropriate procedures. It should be used as a guide to our budget decisions as we move forward.

Public Transportation

I am committed to providing access to public transportation. The Select Board has consistently underfunded and has now totally eliminated the funding for the only link to public transportation for town residents. Surrounding towns have consistently funded the RTP bus at the requested $5000 level while Raymond provided $2000. The total elimination of funding for this important service means the bus no longer stops in Raymond.

We can do better.
